West Ham United: Michael Carrick move mooted amid David Moyes sack decision
Henry Winter has backed David Moyes to continue as West Ham manager amid calls for his sacking but admitted that he thinks Michael Carrick would be a good alternative.
The Hammers manager is under heavy fire at London Stadium, with West Ham currently without a victory since a 2-0 win over Arsenal on 28 December, with many attacking his style of play.
However, The Times journalist was quick to jump to Moyes’ aid, stating that fans “cannot forget” the memories that he made by winning the Europa Conference League final last season, even if the feels that Carrick might one day have fancied managing the club he played for.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Sunday (25 February, 9:56am), Winter said: “He is a good, reliable manager. But maybe fans are seeing all these young guns coming in.
“I always thought Michael Carrick might go there [to West Ham] at some point but he is busy rebuilding Middlesbrough. There are good, exciting young managers around and maybe West Ham fans want that.
“But the trip to Prague last year was just fantastic. You cannot forget that David Moyes gave them that trip, and their first trophy in 40 years. I think we need to appreciate David Moyes.”
Is David Moyes underappreciated at West Ham United?
Moyes certainly deserves his plaudits for lifting the Europa Conference League last season, pipping Fiorentina to the trophy in the final. That joy cannot last forever, though.
It becomes far too easy to live in the past in football. It also becomes difficult to part ways with a club where success has been found, which may be why Moyes has not walked away yet.
Sadly for the Scot, football is a results-orientated sport and recent matches have not been up to par, with West Ham yet to win a match in 2024 and break their eight-game winless run in all competitions.
Being knocked out of the FA Cup by Bristol City was one of the most embarrassing moments during this run of games, as well as the 6-0 thrashing by Arsenal.

Something drastic needs to change at London Stadium. The Hammers have scored just one goal in the last four matches, with the team clearly suffering without Lucas Paqueta.
The Brazilian is set to return to the squad very soon, but it would be a miracle if the return of just one player turns West Ham’s form on its head, which is exactly what Moyes needs at the moment.
In other West Ham news, a Hammers ace is on the radar of an international manager amid concerns regarding one of his teammates at the London Stadium.
