West Ham United may have to wait to sign Thilo Kehrer until his contract ends

Thilo Kehrer may wait until he is a free agent next summer to make his next career move as West Ham United push to sign him, according to Ignazio Genuardi.

The German international is the subject of interest from the Hammers who are searching frantically for a new central defender with Issa Diop now set to leave the club to join London rivals Fulham.

They had identified the Paris Saint-Germain ace as one of their main targets but the 25-year-old is aware that his contract at Parc Des Princes only extends until the end of the season.

Genuardi reports that Kehrer now could wait for the duration of the 2022-23 season with the French champions and then look to move next summer when he could have bigger clubs across Europe interested due to the lack of a transfer fee required.

He is currently hesitating between the two choices but West Ham need a new signing now so next year is not good enough for David Moyes who only has Kurt Zouma available at centre-half.

No good

Kehrer’s decision on his move and the hesitation surrounding it is not helping the Irons right now because they are in full-on panic mode.

Ben Johnson had the unenviable task of having to try and mark Erling Haaland on Sunday as Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners at the London Stadium because there were no other options in defence.

He cannot keep playing as a central defender if West Ham want any chance of challenging the European places once again and that will require a new signing pronto.

Nayef Aguerd was due to be the answer to the problem but he is now sidelined and Craig Dawson also missed the visit of the reigning champions but he should be back sooner rather than later to ease some concern.

But it was a problem last season and it is once again this time around and it has to be an issue that gets resolved before the Europa Conference League begins in September.
