West Ham United: Lucas Paqueta slammed by Brazilian media after 2-1 loss v Morocco

Lucas Paqueta has been slammed by Brazil’s media after the West Ham midfielder was involved in the Seleção’s 2-1 defeat to Morocco.

A Casemiro goal wasn’t enough for the South American giants as the World Cup semi-finalists continued their impressive rise with goals from Sofiane Boufal and Abdelhamid Sabiri.

The West Ham star was once again part of Brazil’s midfield and the 25-year-old has faced criticism during the aftermath of the defeat.

West Ham

“Morocco’s strong midfield was superior to Brazil’s for most of the game, mainly because of the understated performances of Andrey Santos and Lucas Paquetá and the lack of cover for the defenders,” wrote Brazilian news outlet, UOL (25 March).

Former national team player Craque Neto said on radio show, Band now (25 March): “I would put Raphael Veiga and remove Paquetá because Paquetá is playing a bad match. Andrey also needs to show up more for the game.”

Furthermore, Goal Brasil reporter Raisa Simplicio said (via Twitter, 23 March): “In fact, Lucas Paquetá does not have a good game. Incidentally, there are few players who have a good game so far in the Brazilian national team.”

Tough

Paqueta has certainly endured a tough season. There were high expectations on the 25-year-old when he made the move to West Ham United and the Hammmers’ torrid campaign hasn’t helped the midfielder. He’s unclear on what his preferred role is for his club and country.

For Brazil, Paqueta is often used in a deeper-lying role, however, whenever he dons a claret and blue shirt, he operates in a more advanced position. The onus is now on the Brazilian to perform in his preferred position. A relegation battle wasn’t anticipated, but he’s been part of the issue for West Ham.

West Ham

The club cannot consider Championship football and it’s up to the big-name players to drag West Ham into some sort of winning form. The close-knit nature of the Premier League relegation battle means one or two wins could see the Irons clear of the bottom three.

The upcoming home fixtures against Southampton and Newcastle must be taken advantage of.
