West Ham United chief Karren Brady slams ‘vile’ Luton Town chants aimed at Jarrod Bowen

West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady has slammed a section of Luton Town supporters for the “vile and disgusting” chants they aimed at Jarrod Bowen.

Derogatory chants referencing Bowen’s partner Dani Dyer could clearly be heard during Sky Sports’ live coverage of the 2-1 win at Luton Town on Friday [1 September].

Bowen responded in the best possible way by opening the scoring for the Hammers at Kenilworth Road, but Brady was outraged by the song.

“[Bowen] is such a nice young man. I was there obviously at Luton watching the game, and I have to say, some of the chants he had to put up with were absolutely vile,” Brady told talkSPORT, as per their live blog [4 September, 10:44].

“I was so angry when I read in the newspaper, and I won’t say which paper, they called that chant ‘amusing’. Calling his girlfriend, who’s got three children, a young woman, the names they called her, his football career has nothing to do with her.

“And they used that as a tool against him. I thought it was absolutely vile and disgusting, and for a newspaper to say it was ‘amusing’ I thought was just plain wrong.

“It’s not amusing, it’s not funny, and it shouldn’t be allowed to happen.”

Last laugh

Bowen is a very popular presence in the West Ham dressing room for a reason.

The four-cap England international is one of those who plays with a smile on his face and has every reason to be loving life at the moment.

Shortly after the birth of his twins, Bowen scored the winning goal in West Ham’s Europa Conference League final triumph against Fiorentina.

The 26-year-old has picked up from where he left off last season with three goals and an assist in United’s first four Premier League matches this campaign.

That includes a strike against Luton that went a long way to ensuring he had the last laugh while being serenaded by those unsavoury chants.

Hopefully, for Bowen this is a run of form he can now maintain once club football resumes after the international break.
