West Ham United: Kalvin Phillips recall mooted to solve Gareth Southgate ‘dilemma’ for England

Michael Brown has questioned whether West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips could earn an England recall to solve a “dilemma” for Gareth Southgate.

In an interview with BBC Sport on Friday (22 March), the pundit said it’s a “concern” for the Three Lions boss as to who will play on the left wing at the upcoming European Championships.

He added that Phil Foden could potentially play in that position, handing Southgate the opportunity to play Kobbie Mainoo or Conor Gallagher in central midfielder or bring Phillips back into the squad despite him being dropped following his poor form during his loan spell with the Hammers.

Kalvin Phillips can’t play for England amid West Ham form

It came as no real surprise when Phillips was left out of the latest England squad after he’s endured a miserable first couple of months with West Ham.

The midfielder clearly wasn’t match-fit when he made the switch to the London Stadium from Manchester City, leading to him making a few mistakes in his first few games.

That has seen him lose his place in the starting lineup, giving Southgate no option other than to leave him at home this time around.

West Ham
Kalvin Phillips has struggled since joining West Ham United on loan from Manchester City.

While the door certainly won’t be closed to him following his exploits with the Three Lions over the past few years, it’s surely going to be difficult for him to force his way back into the reckoning.

His primary focus surely has to be on getting himself right and playing well for the Hammers up until the end of the season in the hope that he can earn a recall for the European Championships.
