West Ham United: Journalist shares telling verdict on last-minute transfer of Harrison Ashby

Journalist Jacque Talbot has shared his thoughts on the potential last-gasp transfer of West Ham United defender Harrison Ashby to Newcastle United.

The Daily Mail reported on 20 January that Newcastle were interested in making a move for Ashby after seeing an initial approach rejected earlier in the month.

An eager Newcastle United fan posed the question as to whether his beloved club would sign a midfielder this month or not, with Talbot naming a West Ham United “right back” and Everton’s Anthony Gordon.

“I think it’ll be Gordon and that West Ham RB,” replied Talbot to the fan on Twitter. (26 January, 8:15 PM)

Talbot is surely alluding to West Ham United right-back Ashby, who as mentioned above has received plenty of interest from Eddie Howe’s side.

One to watch.

Harrison has only featured for West Ham United seven times for 365 minutes for the first-team and has yet to make any real dint in Moyes’ side.

Despite this, the right-back is highly thought of at the London Stadium and it’s unlikely that the Irons would let one of their gems leave on the cheap.

Nevertheless, Ashby is out of contract this summer, meaning the club could look to cash in on him to avoid losing him for nothing when the season ends.

The Scotland U21 prospect nearly moved to Newcastle in the summer but a deadline approach from the Tyneside club was rejected by West Ham United.

With the harsh and long Premier League season still far from finished, the Hammers will have to navigate it alongside the UEFA Europa Conference League.

This might mean that Moyes and co will want as many options in their squad as possible and could be the reason behind Ashby staying in East London.

Whatever the case may be, Ashby is a top talent and it would be a shame to see an academy prospect leave the team to a direct Premier League rival.
