West Ham United insiders blast ‘nonsense’ Daily Mail story

The Daily Mail’s claim that Edson Alvarez will earn £148,000 a week is “nonsense”, according to West Ham insiders.

The Mail reported in its print edition on 6 August that the Mexican would be earning a top salary, while Sean Whetstone has claimed via SixFootTwo that insiders have said this is untrue and the Ajax midfielder will actually be earning a much lower £100,000 per week.

Alvarez is set to complete his move to East London soon, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the insiders claiming the fee to be £32million plus £3million in add-ons.

As quoted by SixFootTwo, the club insider said: “He will be on £100k a week, and the fee is £32m plus £3m of add-ons. The club needs to let it be known that the Mail story is nonsense.”

Conflicting

While it can be tough to determine the accuracy of a source, Whetstone’s claims here are strong. Whetstone has a good track record and has done a lot of work for reputable Hammers source Claret and Hugh, so his assertion should not be taken lightly.

However, such a drastic overestimation by the Daily Mail is poor to see. £148,000 per week would be very steep wages for a player who would not have been earning anywhere near that in the Eredivisie, even playing for Ajax.

West Ham fans will be happy to hear that Alvarez is not on such a substantial wage. While he looks to be a quality addition, he is still unproven in Premier League football and many question marks still remain regarding the Hammers’ midfield.

The transfer fee for the Mexican seems fair, considering his age, experience and skill set. He looks likely to help fill the void left by Declan Rice’s departure, but more business must be done on West Ham’s end to improve the squad.

With this news, it seems like the Hammers are much more free when it comes to their wage structure. Hammers fans can take solace in the fact that £48,000 per week has appeared from nowhere.

While sources can often be conflicting, it is often useful if insiders clarify any misinformation.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to get their next deal done “this week” as links to Chelsea’s young left-back emerge.
