West Ham United: ‘Grim’ Kalvin Phillips update emerges as Gareth Southgate watches on

Gareth Southgate was in attendance at the 2-2 draw between West Ham and Burnley, as Kalvin Phillips’ England hopes now look grim, according to Football London.

Southgate watched on as the midfielder was dragged off at half-time following another disappointing performance with the Hammers 2-0 down.

After several mistakes and being sent off in his first few games for West Ham, the most recent blow may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back with the England boss watching live.

Will Kalvin Phillips receive an England call-up?

Southgate is set to announce his England squad on 14 March ahead of friendlies against Belgium and Brazil, and it now seems extremely unlikely that the West Ham midfielder will play any part.

The irony in the fact that it now looks unlikely that Phillips will make that squad is that the move to East London came about largely in an effort to win back favour with Southgate, having been told he needed to play regular football to be involved.

Since moving to West Ham, it has been nightmare after nightmare for the midfielder, and his England chances would likely have been better served by staying at Manchester City, to begin with, even with the heavily reduced playing time.

With the European Championships quickly approaching and this the last chance for Southgate to assess his squad ahead of the tournament, Phillips will have to turn his performances around as soon as possible to stand a chance of making it.
