West Ham United: Emerson Palmieri demands £95,000-a-week to move to London Stadium

Emerson Palmieri wants wages of £95,000-a-week should he move to West Ham United as talks with Chelsea resume, according to The Evening Standard.

It was reported by The Sun’s Jack Rosser on Wednesday 17 August (via Twitter) that the Hammers had walked away from a deal for the 29-year-old Italy international.

However, The Standard reported on Friday 19 August that talks have started again between Chelsea and West Ham over a potential move for Emerson.

It’s understood Emerson favours a move to the London Stadium over Nottingham Forest and Atlanta but is allegedly asking for a weekly wage of £95,000.

A lot of money

Offering Chelsea’s third-choice left-back nearly £100,000-a-week would be quite a commitment from West Ham should they decide to bring Emerson to the club.

It’s clear that David Moyes does need a left-back this summer, but he has to be astute with the transfer fee and wages that he decides to part with.

Emerson is an experienced defender but has been very much second fiddle at Chelsea during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Whether he is worthy of £95,000-a-week is up for debate.

The club would potentially be better off using that kind of money to invest in a younger and cheaper alternative to eventually replace Aaron Cresswell in Moyes’ squad.

Emerson is 28 and will probably be able to perform at a good level for at least three more years before he begins to decline.

If the Hammers are tempted to offer him a big deal it could well cost them plenty of money in the long run.

This is a move that could work in the short term, but if a younger alternative becomes available the club should look elsewhere.
