West Ham United labelled ‘utter disgrace’ by Stan Collymore as £900m EFL news emerges

Stan Collymore has slammed West Ham for reportedly rejecting a deal that would have seen £900million handed to EFL clubs.

The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday (12 March) that West Ham are one of 10 Premier League sides to have turned down the proposal.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are the others to have said no.

It is claimed the Irons will take legal action if they are made to contribute towards a pot that will be distributed among teams down the ladder.

Writing on his personal Twitter account [12 March], Collymore labelled the 10 clubs in question an “utter disgrace”.

Collymore went on to point out that many of those clubs have played in the second, third, fourth and fifth tiers of English football previously.

The former Liverpool striker added: “Not ONE Premier League club exists WITHOUT the pyramid it came from.”

West Ham unwilling to sign EFL financial package

The full details of this £900m package have not been laid out in full, so it is hard to know exactly how much money is going where.

The problem is that there is a massive gap between teams high up in the Championship and those fighting for survival at the bottom of League Two.

For example, Leicester City and Leeds United are in far less need of additional cash than, say, a Sutton United.

Then you have a team like Reading, who are in desperate need of a financial lifeline to stay afloat.

In that instance, it makes sense for Premier League clubs to distribute the huge funds they bring in to ensure the EFL remains alive and well.

At the same time, there are question marks over how the funds will be distributed, so it is hard to get as worked up as Collymore clearly is.

The general consensus seems to be that these 10 teams are now basically scum, but let us wait and see what else comes of it first.
