West Ham United: Dermot Gallagher baffled live on Sky Sports by controversy in draw v Newcastle
Dermot Gallagher was baffled by the controversial decision to not send off Bruno Guimaraes in the West Ham draw against Newcastle United on Sunday (8 October).
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on Monday (9 October), the former Premier League referee said the Brazil international was “extremely lucky” to not receive a second yellow following a foul on James Ward-Prowse.
He added that there couldn’t be any argument from the 25-year-old midfielder and that you would “anticipate him going” for a challenge like that in the 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

“Extremely, extremely lucky,” said Gallagher. “If he gets a second yellow card there, none of the four of us are going to argue.
“I think he’s got really, really lucky. It’s difficult to say anything other than the fact you anticipate him going.”
No consistency
There is absolutely no consistency whatsoever in the officiating from the Premier League officials at this moment in time and it’s beyond frustrating.
The same referee probably wouldn’t hesitate in handing out a second yellow in that instance on another day and that’s where the major problem lies.
As Gallagher pointed out, Guimaraes was very fortunate to not be given his marching orders as it was a blatant foul that was more than worthy of a yellow card.

It also probably had a huge impact on the result of the game, with the Hammers in the lead at the moment in time before Newcastle came back into the contest in the second half.
It’s completely unacceptable for supposedly top-class officials to make these basic errors on a weekly basis and their recent performances simply have to improve.
