West Ham United: Conor Coventry contract extended ahead of Rotherham United loan

West Ham United have extended Conor Coventry’s contract by 12 months ahead of a loan move to Rotherham United for the remainder of the 2022/23 season, the club has announced.

The midfielder has made seven appearances across all competitions for the Hammers this term, including three starts in the Europa Conference League, but has failed to consistently force his way into David Moyes’ plans at the London Stadium.

The 22-year-old has now been given the green light to depart the club for Championship outfit Rotherham while also extending his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season.

Via the club’s official website (Thursday 26 January), a statement said: “West Ham United are pleased to announce that the Club have exercised the option to extend Conor Coventry’s contract by 12 months.

“The 22-year-old will now link up with Matt Taylor’s Millers in the EFL Championship as they seek to ensure their stay in the second tier following promotion last season. There, he will line up alongside former West Ham player Jordan Hugill, who joined the Yorkshire club from Norwich City on Wednesday.”

Smart choice

This is a smart piece of business by the Hammers, considering Coventry wasn’t getting the game time he needed to fulfil his potential at the London Stadium.

The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international has only played one minute of Premier League action this month after being brought off the bench against Manchester City in August.

The confirmed switch to Rotherham is Coventry’s fourth loan spell of his career, after prior stints at MK Dons, Lincoln City and Peterborough.

If the club are to get the best out of the midfielder in the future, letting him ply his trade in the Championship is a step up from his previous loan spells in the football league and should aid his progression.

Hopefully, a successful stint at the New York Stadium can prove a fruitful one for the academy graduate and help him force his way back into Moyes’ plans a the beginning of the 2023/24 season.
