West Ham United coaches blown away by Divin Mubama at Rush Green as first-team role mooted

Devin Mubama has been tipped to make a big impression in pre-season and enhance his claims for first-team opportunities at West Ham.

The Athletic ran a feature on Sunday (9 July) picking out young players from each Premier League club for fans to keep an eye on this season.

Striker Mubama, 18, was noted as one young gun making a splash at Rush Green, and with Michail Antonio representing Jamaica at the Gold Cup and Gianluca Scamacca’s future unclear, he will hope to catch the eye of manager David Moyes in the coming weeks.

“The 18-year-old forward had a memorable 2022-23 season, making his first-team debut against Romanian side FSCB, scoring his first senior goal against AEK Larnaca (both during West Ham’s triumphant Europa Conference League run) and winning the FA Youth Cup with the club’s under-18s,” the Athletic story read.

“Mubama, who has represented England at under-19 level, has already made three league appearances for West Ham and they have been reluctant to let him go out on loan. Highly regarded by coaches at the club’s Rush Green training ground, Mubama will hope to impress manager David Moyes over the forthcoming weeks.”

Worth a go

West Ham just cannot quite seem to get it right with strikers.

Big money has been spent in the past trying to solve a problem area but, by and large, there have been some pretty expensive flops at West Ham.

Gianluca Scamacca is in danger of being the latest to earn that tag, the Italian scored just three times in the Premier League during his debut campaign and is being strongly linked with a return to Serie A with both Roma and AC Milan.

Danny Ings joined from Aston Villa in January of course, but the Hammers are still being tipped to enter the market to sign at least one new forward this transfer window.

But the answer to their striker issues may already be solved in the form of Mubama and, with a Europa League campaign to factor in this season, David Moyes should take the plunge and afford the teenager plenty of opportunities.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have expressed interest in signing Harry Maguire amid a £35m update.
