West Ham United buy-back and sell-on clause options for Pierre Ekwah shared
West Ham United do not have a buy-back option on Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah after he left the club this summer, reports ExWHUEmployee.
Writing on his podcast’s official website (6 September), Ex reports that the club don’t have the option to re-sign him for a fixed amount or ahead of rival clubs in the future as part of the deal that saw him go to the Stadium of Light.
But West Ham do have a 35% sell-on clause in the deal and will earn money every time he hits an appearance milestone too, making it a solid deal for the 21-year-old who wasn’t near the first-team this season.

“We inserted a few items into the deal that saw Ekwah depart for Sunderland,” stated Ex on The West Ham Way Podcast. “Firstly there is a 35% sell-on clause which is significant.
“There are also appearance-related payments. So when he plays 20, 40, 60 games etc we receive additional monies.
“There is however no buy-back clause, unfortunately. So West Ham have no rights to sign the player back ahead of any other clubs.”
Smart business
When you saw the transfer window this summer, buy-back clauses and sell-on percentages were a big story across the summer in major deals.
It is seemingly the way the market is moving towards and West Ham were smart to get in on that action with Ekwah’s sale knowing that he wouldn’t be making it here any time soon.

Now if he goes on to become the top talent we felt he could potentially come we’ll be entitled to 35% of any fee that Sunderland are able to extract for him which would mean we’re not short-changed.
If he doesn’t, then the fee we received already would be seen as justified and we’ll still get extra cash on top when he reaches a certain amount of appearances.
It’s a good deal that has the potential to be even better in the future, so fans should be happy about how this deal has panned out and how our business was handled all summer.
