West Ham United boost in Mateo Retegui race after Fabrizio Romano update

West Ham United have been linked with a move to sign Italy striker Mateo Retegui – and Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on the 23-year-old could well have boosted their chances.

Argentinian news outlet, Sitio Andino, reported (31 March) that the Hammers had made a personal approach for the Tigres striker, who recently scored against England during the Azzurri’s 2-1 European qualifying defeat on 23 March.

Despite a number of teams vying for the forward, West Ham could well have been given a boost after Romano’s latest tweet.

“The race to sign Mateo Retegui remains open. Eintracht Frankfurt want him but nothing has been agreed yet, not even on personal terms,” wrote The Guardian journalist (personal Twitter account, 5 April).

“Inter have already had approaches to understand deal conditions — nothing concrete/advanced with Atlético Madrid at this stage.”

With Eintracht Frankfurt thought to be the front runners, this is certainly a big boost for the Hammers. The race is still “open”, with discussions yet to reach an advanced stage, so West Ham can still force their way to the front.

Another forward coming through the door in the summer is a must for David Moyes. Michail Antonio is now edging past his best and could well move on when the transfer window opens in June. Therefore, another younger alternative could well be on the cards and Retegui certainly fits the bill.

There will be a number of transfer sagas which rumble on over the course of the summer and the Italy international could well be one to keep a keen eye on from a West Ham perspective.

Nevertheless, another busy summer is expected at the London Stadium.
