West Ham United board slammed amid ‘strange’ David Moyes sack news

Michael Brown has slammed the West Ham board for their lack of support for David Moyes as calls for the Scot’s sacking continue at the London Stadium.

Moyes has been under immense pressure from the Hammers, with many heavily criticising the defensive style of play despite having the attacking talents of Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus at his disposal.

Though results have picked up in recent weeks, calls for the manager’s sacking have continued, and Browen believes the West Ham board could have done more to quieten the fans.

Speaking via BBC’s Final Score on Saturday (6 April), transcribed by BBC Sport, Brown said: “It is a really strange situation at West Ham.

“Just as you think they are getting success, pushing on in Europe, getting towards the top six, talk of David Moyes getting a new contract. But that has all gone away.

“He’s got unbelievable experience, does absolutely everything for the football club, a true workaholic.

“The fans want a more attacking style of football and Moyes has tried to be more progressive, lot a few games and has tried to refocus on winning games and getting results first and foremost. They are in a good place though.

“I think the board should have supported David Moyes earlier. It would have quietened the noise around him and the team.”

Does David Moyes deserve more support at West Ham United?

Moyes has brought a lot of success to the London Stadium, having lifted the Europa Conference League last season and claim West Ham’s first European title in the last few decades.

Football is a results-based sport, however, and he cannot deny that most of the performances since the start of 2024 have been incredibly subpar.

The Hammers went on an eight-match winless streak at the start of the year, which included being knocked out of the FA Cup by Bristol City, drawing 2-2 with 20th-place Sheffield United and a 6-0 thrashing by Arsenal.

Despite ending that run with a 4-2 win over Brentford in February and continuing their Europa League campaign after bypassing Freiburg, calls for Moyes’ sacking have returned louder than ever.

The 4-3 capitulation against Newcastle United delivered a serious hammer blow to Moyes’ side, having originally taken a 3-1 in the match, and the manager has taken the brunt of that.

Moyes is likely to remain in his position until the end of the season when a decision will finally be made over his contract at the London Stadium.
