West Ham United at risk of losing Paul Nevin as coach admits door is open to exit

David Moyes has seen a number of his West Ham backroom staff leave in recent seasons and Paul Nevin could be the next out of the door.

Just months after losing Stuart Pearce as his West Ham assistant, Moyes could see another crucial member of his backroom staff leave the London Stadium.

Nevin joined the Hammers in February 2020 and has grown to become a key part of Moyes’ staff. But the 53-year-old fancies his hand at management himself and has admitted that he’d leave West Ham if a better opportunity arose.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Nevin said: “I’m not seeking it at the moment. I’m in a great place with a great club but I owe it to myself and the people I’ve worked with.

“If the right opportunity came at the right time then I need to give it a go because maybe with that nudge at the door if I’m successful, it can allow me to bring others in and give others opportunities.”

Tough to swallow

With Moyes’ staff already shuffling around plenty in recent seasons, it’d be tough for the West Ham boss to lose another pivotal member of his team.

Of course, it’s impossible to blame Nevin for wanting to pursue his own career dreams and forge a management journey of his own, but from a West Ham point of view it’d be a huge blow.

It’s a credit to Nevin that he’s grown to be so important for the Hammers – his work on the training field has helped improve numerous players in Moyes’ squad.

Nevin’s departure would open up a space for West Ham to find a new coach, but constantly chopping and changing the coaching staff can’t have a good effect on the squad’s day-to-day work.

Everyone at West Ham would be delighted and proud of Nevin should he get an opportunity elsewhere, but many – including Moyes – are probably hoping that the former England coach sticks around with the Hammers for a little longer.
