West Ham: talkSPORT broadcaster slams David Moyes for call v Manchester United

David Moyes has been slammed for the “nonsense” decision not to start Maxwel Cornet in West Ham United’s clash with Manchester United by talkSPORT broadcaster Tom Rennie.

The Hammers put in a reasonable display at Old Trafford and were unfortunate to lose 3-0 on Sunday (4 February), with Rasmus Hojlund’s strike and Alejandro Garnacho’s double seeing Moyes’ side come away empty-handed.

While Cornet impressed in the Irons’ draw with Sheffield United, the Scotsman didn’t turn to the winger until the 72nd minute, a decision that enraged Rennie especially after Moyes allowed Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma to depart on deadline day.

Writing on X (4 February) he said: “Oh… and whether you like Cornet or not, he’s what you’ve got, so start the guy, and develop him. Everyone else has been sold or is injured.

“You liked him £17m enough 18 months ago, and he scored on his last start. Enough with this nonsense.”

Moyes ‘nonsense’ pulling West Ham down

West Ham United’s performance at Old Trafford was certainly not deserving of a 3-0 defeat and on another day with a bit more luck on their side, the Hammers may well have been able to claim all three points on Sunday.

The Irons aren’t exactly blessed with many attacking options currently, so it does seem bizarre that Moyes opted to start Ben Johnson in a more advanced role, instead of awarding Cornet a rare start.

Despite his limited involvement this season, the 27-year-old has looked bright when he has managed to step onto the pitch and would have added an extra dimension to West Ham’s attack. As Rennie suggested, the Hammers spent a lot of money on him and they should be using him.

Fans have been quick to voice their frustration with Moyes so far this season and that is unlikely to change as the Irons continue this poor recent run of form.

With his contract and future hanging in the balance currently, the Scotsman needs to win over some of the fanbase sooner rather than later.
