West Ham: talkSPORT broadcaster slams ‘amateur’ Nayef Aguerd as new footage emerges v Burnley
West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd has been slammed by Tom Rennie for his “amateur” defending in the first half of the Irons’ draw with Burnley.
David Moyes’ side came from behind to share the points with the Clarets in a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium on Sunday (10 March) thanks to Lucas Paqueta’s second-half strike and Danny Ings’ leveller in stoppage time.
While there was a sense of relief at full-time, talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie has been quick to criticise both Aguerd and Kalvin Phillips for their failure to close down David Fofana for the away side’s opening goal.
Writing on X on Monday (11 March) he said: “Magnificent strike. Fofana looks like a good player. However, the defending here from Aguerd and Phillips is amateur.”
Will West Ham United sell Nayef Aguerd during the summer transfer window
After an incredible start to the season, Aguerd has had a poor second half to the campaign and come in for plenty of criticism for his poor performance at the heart of Moyes’ defence alongside the likes of Konstantinos Mavropanos and Kurt Zouma.
Speculation has followed the Moroccan defender throughout the season, with various links emerging suggesting that the Hammers centre-back could be set to depart the London Stadium during the summer window.
While that would have been considered a disaster at the start of the campaign, now most supporters wouldn’t be too disappointed if they heard Moyes had accepted a bid to allow the 27-year-old to depart.
Hopefully, Aguerd will rediscover his form before the end of the season to help the Irons book their place in Europe next year. On the other hand, Phillips looks like a lost cause in a West Ham shirt and his performances this season have been nothing short of amateurish.
