West Ham were on the cusp of signing Martin Braithwaite from Barcelona, according to a report in Sport on Friday.
The Hammers are looking to sign a striker and the Denmark international was understood to be nearing a move to the London Stadium.
A few hours later, the reports were dispelled with Sky Sports’ Fabrizio Romano claiming that no bids were made for the player.
Via his personal Twitter account, he said, “Barcelona have not received any bid from West Ham for Martin Braithwaite.”
However, even though the transfer was not in its advanced stages, Hammers fans took to Facebook to make their very strong opinions of the player heard.
Here’s what they said:
At 30-years-old, Braithwaite is not a player we should sign if we have an eye on the future.
David Moyes has recently signed a new deal and surely his aim would be to build his team around players in their mid-20s and a few in their late-20s.
Braithwaite perhaps may be past his best and he’s not the same player who would’ve walked into our team two or three years ago.
Thankfully, Romano was quick to rebuff the reports as we must stay away from signing players like him and instead focus on younger options like Tammy Abraham.
The Chelsea forward is certainly favoured by the club and at some point, we must stop playing the waiting game and make inroads to bring him to the London Stadium this summer.
