West Ham star Jarrod Bowen in line for big development says Jermain Defoe
Jermain Defoe has tipped Jarrod Bowen to be the “surprise” in the England squad at the next World Cup thanks to his excellent West Ham form.
The ex-England striker has just left Rangers and has been impressed by Bowen’s fantastic output this season.
The former Sunderland forward also credits manager David Moyes with a role in the development of Bowen, having spent time playing under the Scot himself when the pair were in the North East.
In an interview with Jim White on talkSPORT on Thursday Defoe said of former Hull City man Bowen: “He’s someone that works really hard. Technically he’s good, and he just seems to be improving every game. He scores goals. He’s sharp.
“Playing under a manager like David Moyes will always improve you anyway because of his attention to detail and the training, and his huge experience.
“If I was any of these players now… I would be thinking I can be that surprise name on the plane.”
Few players know what it takes to be successful as an English goalscorer in the Premier League era than Defoe having started his illustrious career in East London.
His seal of approval will surely please Irons fans, and his suggestion that Bowen could be in the hunt for a World Cup spot is not outrageous.
If anything, the fact that the tournament is being held in the winter of this year due to the heat in Qatar works against the Hammers man.
Were it being held during the summer as usual he would surely be in very strong contention based on his current form, and the relative lack-thereof being exhibited by various other players who would be competition for a place.
If fortunes at the London Stadium were to change for the start of next season and players like Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho play themselves back into form they may push themselves back up the queue.
But if Bowen keeps up his current form until the winter he will surely still be in contention to join Declan Rice on the plane.
In other West Ham news, this transfer target has a £21million price tag put on him.
