West Ham relegation chances predicted by supercomputer after £48m transfer spend
West Ham made five new additions in the winter to bolster their chances of survival.
Just years on from being crowned European champions, West Ham are in the midst of a relegation battle heading into the second half of the Premier League season.
However, in order to boost their chances of avoiding that, the Irons spent £48million to bring fresh quality into their squad, with the arrivals of Pablo, Taty Castellanos, Adama Traore and Axel Disasi, the latter of whom joined on loan from Chelsea on deadline day.
Nuno Espirito Santo will need his new signings to hit the ground running at the London Stadium to stop the rot that has been setting in, but as per Opta’s latest supercomputer predictions, it will take a gargantuan effort to avoid the drop.
West Ham remain among the favourites for relegation
West Ham sit six points away from safety heading into the final 14 games of the season, which doesn’t seem like an insurmountable number of points.
With a far inferior goal difference, that gap is effectively seven points.
However, that is almost a third of the total number of points the Hammers have picked up after 24 games, showcasing just how much improvement is needed.
But as per Opta‘s supercomputer prediction, that isnt expected to arrive anytime soon.
The Irons are predicted to finish the season in 18th, with just 34 points, which is just 10 more than they currently have.
| Premier League | Predicted finish | Points | Relegation chances |
| Nottingham Forest | 16th | 43 | 6.63% |
| Leeds United | 17th | 42 | 9.8% |
| West Ham | 18th | 34 | 82.78% |
| Burnley | 19th | 27 | 98.18% |
| Wolves | 20th | 20 | 99.9% |
Nuno’s side have a 82.78 per cent chance of relegation, with Leeds the next most likely to go down with a 9.8 per cent chance of the drop.
West Ham’s survival hopes may hinge on one winter signing
With Adama, Castellanos and Pablo, West Ham have bolstered their attacking options significantly, at least from a numbers perspective if not for quality.
However, scoring goals hasn’t been their issue, and instead, it has been keeping them out.
Even after Burnley conceded three against Sunderland, West Ham still have the worst defensive record in the Premier League, and yet they still managed just one defensive signing.
That being Disasi, who is going to have to be an absolute game-changer for the Hammers if they are to survive this season, but after such a lack of gametime, there will be doubts over whether that can happen.
