West Ham pull out of the race for Josh Doig

West Ham United have pulled out of the race to sign Hibernian defender Josh Doig this week.

The Edinburgh Evening News have shared that the Irons were keeping tracks on the 19-year-old, but no longer.

It is reported that Premier League duo Watford and Burnley are the two sides taking their interest the furthest.

The deal is only said to cost up to £3million with add-ons, and the Irons have turned down that opportunity.

A left-back is needed, with Arthur Masuaku far too injury prone to over serious cover the Aaron Cresswell this season.

Doig is there for the taking, it should have been easy to conclude.

Jack Ross left the young sensation out of his squad for the opening day clash against Motherwell yesterday, confirming his exit was imminent.

Chances gone.

As said, Doig was there for the taking if the Irons wanted him bad enough.

David Moyes will know the Scottish market like the back of his hand, and he must have seen something that doesn’t tickle his fancy.

The 19-year-old would surely have favoured a move to the London Stadium, with the chance to play in Europe every week and challenge for the top six each year.

West Ham have clearly prioritised the signing of a central defender first, and whether Doig was cheap or not, that is needed more.

A defender who can come in and start regularly immediately is needed more than a talent who will take time to develop, and that is just unfortunate timing.

Doig should still get his move to the Premier League, and we hope that we won’t live to regret this one further down the line.
