West Ham never seriously tried to sign Barcelona striker Memphis Depay – Dean Jones

West Ham United were never keen to sign Barcelona striker Memphis Depay this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Dutch international has been linked with a move away from the Catalan-based club in the ongoing transfer window and reports suggested that the Hammers were one of the clubs in making a move for him.

However, Jones, while talking to Givemesport, stated that the player was offered to the Irons who were never really keen on signing the player.

“Not seriously, no,” he said. “He [Depay] was put to them as an option and they said they would think about it and they talked about it internally, but they didn’t look to pursue it.”

Bad call

West Ham are having a more than decent transfer window where they’ve made a number of key signings to bolster the squad.

However, they might live to regret on not pursuing a move for someone like Depay who would’ve been ideal for the club in more than one aspect.

The Dutch international, who already has experience of playing in the Premier League, is now a much more experienced campaigner and would’ve been coming to the London Stadium after playing a full season for a club of the size of Barcelona which would’ve been beneficial for so many youngsters.

Therefore, despite having an outstanding recruitment record, Moyes might regret it later that he opted to not make a move for the former Manchester United winger.

Depay, who still has 12 months left with the current club, has been at Barcelona since the summer of 2021 when he moved there as a free agent when his contract expired with French club Lyon [Transfermarkt].
