West Ham interested in Cagliari striker Simeone – Di Marzio

West Ham want to sign Diego Simeone’s son from Serie A side Cagliari, according to Sky Sports Italy transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio.

Writing on his website, Di Marzio reports that the Hammers have expressed an interest in Giovanni Simeone, as David Moyes continues to sort out a replacement for flop Sebastian Haller.

Simeone, 25, has scored five goals in 16 appearances this season in Italy’s top-flight. He’s played five times for his country, scoring once on his debut in a 3-0 win over Guatemala in 2018.

The Argentinean is a strong dribbler who presses well from the front, the sort of player David Moyes wants in his system. He’s had 27 attempts at goal and a pass completion of 83% in Serie A this season [WyScout].

A move for Simeone could reportedly rest on the fate of former Hammer Simone Zaza. The Torino striker is attracting interest from Cagliari and contact has been made between the clubs.

Di Marzio said on his website, “Torino in fact received a call from Cagliari, which asked for information on Zaza, already sought by Benevento.

“Before Zaza, however, Cagliari will need to release a forward: West Ham’s interest is strong on Simeone.”

The Hammers will be keeping a close eye on the proceedings between Cagliari and Zaza, as we look to bolster our attacking options before the end of January.

Michail Antonio is our only recognised striker at the moment, recently back from injury. He scored the winners in back-to-back home wins against Burnley and West Brom.
