West Ham in touch with Porto goalkeeper Machesin about summer swoop

West Ham have told Porto goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin they could initiate negotiations to sign him in the summer, according to A Bola.

The Portuguese newspaper reports that after a strong season at Porto, 33-year-old Marchesin has aroused interest from other countries.

It is understood West Ham are one of the clubs keen on the seven-times Argentina international and have signalled to the shot-stopper they could make an effort to sign him ahead of next season.

Fabianski competition

Lukasz Fabianski has been a brilliant goalkeeper for West Ham but his contract expires at the end of next season and he’s had plenty of injury issues in his time in East London.

We’re getting to a point where a replacement or at least a young understudy could be needed for the 36-year-old Pole.

Marchesin is 33-years-old but has done well at Porto in the last couple of seasons after he joined the Portuguese club to replace the legendary Iker Casillas.

He played in Argentina and Mexico before heading to Portugal, where he’s since won a domestic double and this season helped Porto reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

As much as we don’t want to think about Fabianski being replaced, it’d be naive to pretend the goalkeeper position isn’t an issue this summer.

Darren Randolph is still under contract for another couple of years but he’s had some dodgy performances in between the sticks for us and he’s not exactly number-one material.

Marchesin might be better than him – it’s hard to say. But he doesn’t really jump out as a long-term replacement for Fabianski given the fact he’s 33.

In other West Ham news, this “frustrated” fan favourite has dropped a hint about his future amid talk of him moving on.
