West Ham head of recruitment ‘on thin ice’, Moyes future could decide

Rob Newman, the head of recruitment at West Ham, is facing an uncertain future at the club, with his job being made redundant by the influence of Tim Steidten, according to Claret & Hugh.

The online news source shared on 4 November that Newman’s role is becoming more and more limited, and he is now on thin ice, with his focus on Europe becoming less important as the club will prioritise homegrown talent.

It was also shared that a source inside the club claimed the head of recruitment’s future wouldn’t be decided until a call is made on the future of David Moyes, whose contract expires in the summer.

Staff changes will leave Moyes unsure

The update on Newman has come shortly after reports that scout Mick Doherty was leaving the club, meaning two of Moyes’ trusted backroom staff members would be departing after being phased out, leaving questions about his own future in East London.

Doherty was described by The Sun journalist Alan Nixon [Patreon, 15 October] as a long-term ally of Moyes’, while Newman has played a role as the manager’s number two in the scouting department before the arrival of Tim Steidten.

Steidten, the club’s new technical director who arrived ahead of the summer transfer window, has seen his involvement and influence grow in his short time at the London Stadium, which may have directly resulted in key scouting staff being eased out.

There were claims of a bust-up between Moyes and his technical director in the summer [The Guardian, 29 July], with disagreements on transfer decisions the cause. However, those seemed to settle towards the end of the window as West Ham got plenty of business done.

Questions will remain about Steidten’s influence on the club, and therefore on Moyes’ future.
