West Ham handed Arthur Masuaku fitness boost v Southampton

West Ham are likely to have Arthur Masuaku’s services to call upon for their next Premier League game against Southampton, per Claret & Hugh.

The left-back featured in the Under-23s game against Chelsea last week and played the entire 90 minutes for the Hammers youth side.

The 27-year-old sustained an injury against Manchester United at Old Trafford last season and made just 12 Premier League appearances in total.

Great news

With West Ham not signing a left-back this summer, there is an onus on Masuaku to step up and deliver.

Aaron Cresswell is the undisputed first choice, but he is on the wrong side of 30, and will be needing to be replaced very soon.

While Masuaku is not too many years younger than the Englishman, he still offers David Moyes a different option down the left.

He’s versatile so can also play further up the field as a left-winger, something that could be useful if the Hammers go deep in Europe and will be required to rotate their squad to play two games per week.

That said, Moyes will be delighted to have him back and will hope that he can take his performances to the next level and challenge Cresswell for a first-team berth.

Masuaku is also rated highly by Mark Noble, who referred to him as “brilliant” two seasons ago. [Official club website]

It remains to be seen whether he will play any minutes next weekend against Southampton.
