West Ham emerge as frontrunners for striker as PL rivals set £40million price tag – report

West Ham United are leading the race to sign Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi in the summer, according to the Express.

The newspaper reported on their website that the Blues are set to dump the Belgian international as they close in on the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

It is suggested that Frank Lampard’s side have set an asking price of £40million, a deal that would give them £7million profit on the forward.

The 26-year-old is deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, with David Moyes’ side emerging as the frontrunners.

West Ham may be in the market for a new forward, only a year after smashing their transfer record to bring in Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The return to fitness of Michail Antonio as well could mean that the Hammers have a string of options available should Batshuayi decide to make the move permanent.

The future of Albian Ajeti is also uncertain, but if the Swiss international was to remain at the club past this season, a move for Batshuayi would be unlikely.

It is hard to imagine the Hammers spending upwards of £40million on a striker. That sort of fee would put Moyes in a position where he would have to make promises to Batshuayi, similar to the ones made to Haller.

West Ham may be the front runners, but it may certainly be more benefitial for the club if they took a backseat in this one.
