West Ham didn’t sign Layvin Kurzawa because they couldn’t sell Arthur Masuaku – report
West Ham didn’t sign Layvin Kurzawa on deadline day because they couldn’t sell Arthur Masukau first, according to RMC Sport.
The Hammers were linked with moves for a defender and a striker throughout the entire January window but ended the month with zero incomings despite late attempts.
Now RMC Sport have reported that the club had in fact made a move for Paris Saint-Germain defender Kurzawa but a deal never materialised because they couldn’t sell first.

Their report suggests that David Moyes had to sell a defender to make space for him in their squad, with Masuaku selected as the man to be cut as the second-choice left-back.
However when a new club couldn’t be found for DR Congo star, he stayed at the London Stadium and that meant that Kurzawa stayed in Paris too.
Dodged bullet
While a new face is always nice during a transfer window, this sounds to me like a dodged bullet for West Ham.
Kurzawa is a very talented player but he comes with plenty of baggage and a past littered with attitude problems.

Daivd Moyes has done really well to build a squad full of team spirit and good vibes and while it’s possible Kurzawa could have fit into that setup, the likelihood is that it would’ve gone sour at some point.
Masuaku has his flaws, undoubtedly, but he’s proved to be a more than capable understudy for Aaron Cresswell at left-back and has been at his best when played as a wing-back.
That flexibility gives Moyes options as the season goes on, and it seems to me that they’ve made a good decision not to progress with this deal.
