West Ham: David Moyes shares joke he made to Jarrod Bowen after England v Brazil

West Ham manager David Moyes has shared a joke he made to Jarrod Bowen after the winger played for England against Brazil, according to the Daily Mirror.

The report in the print edition on page 62, 30 March, reveals Moyes’ goalscoring target for the forward, who came on as a substitute against Brazil and started against Belgium in the Three Lions’ recent pair of friendlies at Wembley.

While Moyes was pleased that his club charge performed well, the Scot joked that he did not go so far as to support the England team as a whole, saying to the Daily Mirror: “I told [Bowen] I had my Brazil top on under my shirt!

“I spoke to him about his performance against Belgium, which was really good.

“He was one of England’s best players, if not the best.”

David Moyes targets 20 West Ham goals for Jarrod Bowen

Bowen is enjoying a sensational campaign for the Hammers, registering 14 Premier League goals and 18 across all competitions so far.

Moyes stated when talking about the former Hull City attacker that he can reach 20 goals this season and, indeed, it has to be his minimum target for this wonderful campaign he is having.

Bowen has split his time fairly evenly between a right-wing berth and leading the line, starting the season in his more natural wide role before moving more centrally.

However, while the 27-year-old began the campaign netting at a steady rate, scoring in 11 of his first 17 Premier League appearances, he has troubled the scoresheet in just one of his subsequent 11 league outings – though that was a hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Brentford.

In order to reach Moyes’ target of 20 league goals in 2023/24, he must grab six more in the final nine fixtures of the season. He does, though, have at least 11 games to find two strikes to take his tally across all competitions to 20, with a two-legged Europa League quarter-final tie against Bayer Leverkusen to come.

What is nice to see, though, is that while Moyes is clearly keen for his player to impress on the international stage there is still that friendly banter with his squad.
