West Ham chiefs in agreement on Lopetegui amid latest sack update – Sami Mokbel

West Ham United chiefs “have lost faith” in Julen Lopetegui after the Leicester City loss in the Premier League, according to Sami Mokbel.

The Daily Mail journalist reported via the news outlet’s online edition on Thursday [5 December] that the Hammers’ board members and influential figures believe his appointment was a “mistake”.

With the 3-1 loss to the Foxes at the King Power Stadium on 3 December, the Irons’ hierarchy are contemplating parting ways with the 58-year-old head coach.

He is expected to remain in charge for Monday’s (9 December) clash with Wolves [Fabrizio Romano, 5 December], but anything beyond that is up in the air.

Mokbel wrote: “Crucially, influential figures at the London Stadium have lost faith in Lopetegui and believe his appointment was a mistake.”

Lopetegui made his way to the London Stadium dugout after the departure of David Moyes in the summer, and after 14 Premier League games in charge, the Spanish manager has the Hammers in 14th place in the table.

Julen Lopetegui end near at West Ham United

Moyes was a polarising figure among the Irons’ faithful, with the fanbase pretty much split on whether the Scotsman should have stayed or gone.

With Lopetegui, supporters seem to doubt his ability to bring the best out of the talented squad at his disposal.

The 58-year-old has lost the fans’ backing, with many chanting for his exit at the King Power.

West Ham need to get rid of the Spanish head coach before things get worse, with the Hammers just six points above the drop zone.

David Sullivan had been backing Lopetegui’s continuity in recent weeks [GiveMeSport, 25 November], but it remains to be seen whether the Irons’ chairman realises his mistake.

If the Spaniard does indeed manage to stay for another game, he’ll have to face his former side, Wolves, who are also in a precarious position under Gary O’Neil.

Lopetegui has had his shot at trying to implement his ideas at the London Stadium and has failed miserably, and the best option is for the Hammers to move on.
