West Ham are interested in signing Igor Gomes

West Ham have taken a “keen interest” in trying to sign Sao Paulo midfielder Igor Gomes, according to Homme du Match.

They state that the Hammers are interested in signing the 22-year-old, who was “approached by Real Madrid” last year and can leave the club for £12.8million. The report then adds that Gomes is considered the “new Kaka” and would come to fill Felipe Anderson’s space in the side.

This is a very interesting claim, and given that the Hammers have been linked with the likes of Jesse Lingard and Matheus Pereira, this could be one to keep an eye on instead.

Would Gomes be a good signing?

Well, the fact that Real Madrid apparently had a look at him should suggest that this player must have some talent and could be worth a punt.

£12.8million is not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, and if the transfer goes wrong, the Hammers won’t have forked out a considerable amount to bring the Brazilian to the London Stadium.

Obviously, last season they had Lingard, but with that move seemingly stalling, perhaps a move for Gomes makes sense. You would think he could certainly add some unpredictability to this West Ham side and could slot in behind Michail Antonio or any other striker that the Hammers might sign.

In terms of statistics and pedigree Gomes is a former Brazil Under-23 international and has made 114 appearances for Sao Paulo and only directly contributed to 17 goals [transfermarkt].

This isn’t that impressive, it has to be said, but he is still young, and with some coaching, he could improve on his end product over time.

This could be a story to keep an eye on simply because of how cheap Gomes is, and we all know how much David Gold and David Sullivan like to cling on to their money.
