West Ham are better team than Tottenham - Paul Merson

By Josh Heycock

Paul Merson said West Ham have a “better team” than Tottenham ahead of their 1-0 win over Spurs on Sunday.

Despite Tottenham being one place above their London counterparts in the table ahead of the game, Merson believes ‘the new West Ham’ are a stronger outfit and will finish above Nuno Espirito Santo’s side come May.

Last season saw the pair play out a brilliant 3-3 draw, with David Moyes’ men coming back from a 3-0 deficit to earn a point as well as a win in February, so it’s advantage West Ham heading into the 21/22 season meetings.

Writing for the Daily Star, Merson said: “West Ham have gone past Tottenham now. They’re the better team and they’ll probably finish above them this season.

“Things are changing in London. There’s a shift in the balance of power because Spurs and Arsenal aren’t where they used to be.”

New-look West Ham!

When Moyes led West Ham to their first European finish in 9 years last season, shouts of ‘one season wonders’ were ever present surrounding the London Stadium. However The Hammers seem to of silenced any critics with their electric start to this campaign, currently sitting In 5th, they look to be knocking on the door of the ‘big six’ this season.

High flyers Declan Rice and Michael Antonio have now become household names and would walk into the starting 11 of most teams in the Prem. Rice’s ability to guard the back four as well as kick starting attacks with his quick passing and driving runs has made him one of the most sort after midfielders in the world right now, so if Moyes’ wants to cement their place in the European spots, retaining his signature will be a top priority.

On paper, West Ham might not have the world-class names that Spurs possess in Son Heung-Min, Harry Kane or Hugo Lloris but Moyes has got them in a system which brings the absolute best out of everyone in the team, and if they keep progressing at the rate they are now, it won’t be long until they become a staple name at the top end of the Premier League table.

In other West Ham news, Moyes has spoken out about his and Tottenham’s team selection.
