West Ham approach for Nayef Aguerd turned down by Rennes

West Ham have seen their approach for Rennes centre-back Nayef Aguerd turned down instantly, according to French media outlet L’Equipe.

The report claims on January 7 that the Hammers made an approach in order to secure the 25-year-old’s signing this month.

However, the Ligue 1 side showed no interest in entertaining a possible sale and turned down any passes made towards the Morocco international.

Worth pursuing?

The Hammers were linked with the player in the summer as well and even tabled a bid of £17million to sign him.

However, that was turned down by Rennes as they did not want to cash in on him and that appears to be their stance this January as well.

This means that the links to Aguerd aren’t fresh and the players has been on the club’s radar for a while.

Given the injuries to Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, it’s no surprise that they’ve turned to one of their past centre-back targets.

Issa Diop has not proven to be reliable in their stead while Craig Dawson also is prone to making the odd defensive lapse every now and then.

Aguerd will be someone that Moyes can trust and he could form a long-term partnership with Zouma as well.

Whether or not the Hammers can tempt the Moroccan to leave remains to be seen.
