West Ham and Sunderland’s current summer transfer spend compared

West Ham and Sunderland have both been active in the summer transfer market.

The Hammers were in need of an overhaul coming into the new season after what was a disappointing end to last year.

This saw Graham Potter struggle to imprint his philosophy early on at the London Stadium, something he will be hopeful of doing moving into the new campaign.

It is fair to say that the Black Cats have overseen a revolution of their own, having won promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs in dramatic fashion.

A last-minute goal at Wembley has sparked a sizable summer spend with West Ham Zone now comparing the business of both sides ahead of opening day.

West Ham have welcomed four new stars

It has been a slow-burning window for the Irons, although it looks to have improved the squad compared to what it was earlier in the summer.

The recent addition of Mads Hermansen from Leicester City has certainly gone down well in East London, with a new keeper being of paramount importance.

The Dane has joined a free agent duo in Callum Wilson and Kyle Walker-Peters, with both signing after their respective contract exits earlier in the window.

Potter has also welcomed El Hadji Malick Diouf to the London Stadium, with the Senegal international already impressing throughout pre-season.

This quartet of signings have seen the Irons clock up a spend of just £39million, something which has been dwarfed by the output of Sunderland.

Sunderland clock up £130m transfer spend

There is no getting away from the fact that the Black Cats have had an excellent window and a patchy pre-season after securing a place in the Premier League.

It is fair to say that they had the most business to do of any side in the division, but have done so in excellent fashion to this point.

This has seen Granit Xhaka become the headline signing at the Stadium of Light alongside a further 10 additions, with more set to join in the coming weeks.

Sunderland summer signings so far:

Omar Alderete represents the most recent move from Spanish side Getafe for £10.4m, taking their spend to an amount in the £130m region.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this will translate on the pitch and whether Regis Le Bris can start his season with a win over Potter’s Hammers.
