West Ham ace Jarrod Bowen named in Garth Crooks' Team of the Week after draw v Manchester City
Jarrod Bowen has been included in Garth Crooks’ BBC team of the week following his “excellent” performance against Manchester City.
David Moyes’ side held the league leaders to a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium on Sunday [May 15] and would have been disappointed not to have taken all three points having taken a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to a brace from the Englishman.
The point solidified the Hammers’ position in seventh place – after Wolves drew to Norwich – and kept them alive in the fight for a Europa League finish against Manchester United who sit just two points ahead with one game remaining.
Crooks told BBC Sport: “This was an excellent first-half performance by West Ham and a shocking one by Manchester City, only three days after City had demolished Wolves.
“It looked like – for the first time – that Fernandinho had finally come to the end of his career. I can’t ever remember seeing the Brazilian so off the pace.
“Bowen was the player who made City pay for their dreary, uninspiring and frankly dull first-half performance.”
Wow. What a performance that was from Bowen. The forward has been quiet in comparison to the standards he set earlier this season as he single-handedly blew teams away but yesterday, he looked to be back to his best.
The Sky Blues simply couldn’t cope with his pace and killer instinct in front of goal as he ran their defence ragged for the entirety of the first half.
As expected, the league leaders came out with a point to prove which saw the 25-year-old play a more measured role in the team in the second half but he still gave them a lot to think about on the counterattack.
That was the type of performance the Irons’ fans have missed from this season’s key attacker and a stark reminder to Moyes of his importance amid interest from a host of clubs.
Despite going 2-0 up, it was a good point to earn on Mark Noble’s last home game as a Hammer – one that keeps their Europa League dream alive.
