Union Berlin in advanced talks to beat West Ham United to Sergino Dest signing

Union Berlin are in advanced talks to sign West Ham United transfer target Sergino Dest from Barcelona, according to Spanish news outlet, Sport.

Sport claim (29 March) the American full-back is being monitored by a number of clubs in England, Germany and Spain.

His value is understood to have slashed over the course of the 2022/23 season due to an inconsistent loan spell at AC Milan, with the Catalan giants now looking for £10million instead of £26million.

Berlin are believed to be in advanced discussions with the La Liga side, and are keen to strike a deal if they secure Champions League qualification.

Hard to compete

This is looking like a hard deal for West Ham to complete at present with their lowly league position not helping their cause. If the Hammers were competing for Europe, then it’s a move which could gather momentum. Dest has endured a tough couple of seasons, but he’s still extremely young and could eventually hit the levels expected of him.

For West Ham’s board, it’s hard to really plan ahead in terms of their transfer activity. Their Premier League status is still up in the air and if they are relegated to the Championship, they will be shopping in a completely different market.

This weekend’s fixture against Southampton is once again another crunch fixture for David Moyes. The Scot seems to deliver when he needs it most, with the recent win over Nottingham Forest a good example. Defeat against the Saints would certainly leave the board with a decision to make heading into the run-in.
