‘Underwhelmed’ – Sutton questions wisdom of rumoured West Ham plan
West Ham have finally pulled the trigger on what has felt like an increasing inevitability.
Manuel Pellegrini was given his marching orders on Saturday evening after the Hammers’ loss to Leicester City was deemed one result too far for the board to accept.
His dismissal has sparked a barrage of speculation about who will succeed him, but it is understood, as per the BBC, that the plan is to bring David Moyes back to the club.
But Chris Sutton has questioned whether or not he is the right man to get fans back onside in east London.
Speaking on Radio 5 Live, he said: “I wonder how West Ham fans would feel about that appointment, because this is a guy who I felt did very well last time in the job, but he wasn’t deemed to be good enough to get the job full-time last time, so why is he good enough at this moment in time?
“West Ham talked about wanting to appoint a high calibre figure and moving in a different direction, so I mean, if you’re a West Ham fans are you going to be underwhelmed by this appointment?
“The reality is that it’s about staying in the Premier League, which is why Moyes will get appointed.”
This is a fair point from Sutton, but the key here is that Moyes probably was the right man for the job last time around.
The Scot was a steady hand who steered the club away from danger, and in doing so probably proved that he was deserving of a chance on a permanent basis.
Instead, however, the Irons went for a more glamorous name in Pellegrini, and in doing so turned their back on the pragmatism that served them so well when they needed rescuing last time around.
Hopefully, the board have learned their lesson.
