Troy Deeney lauds Jarrod Bowen in West Ham United v Ipswich amid new Lopetegui admission
Troy Deeney was impressed by Jarrod Bowen’s performance against Ipswich Town as Julen Lopetetui faced pressure at West Ham.
The 27-year-old scored and assisted as the Hammers ran out 4-1 winners at the London Stadium on Saturday 5 October, helping Lopetegui’s side to their second league victory of the season.
After three losses in the opening six matches, in addition to the 5-1 EFL Cup loss versus Liverpool, the new manager is already facing pressure, and a poor result against the Tractor Boys could have been disastrous.
Writing via his BBC Team of the Week (6 October), Deeney said: “A huge game not only for West Ham but also for Bowen. The manager was under pressure and he had to deliver as captain – that’s exactly what he did with an assist and a goal.
“He was a threat all game against an Ipswich team that have been very good all season and he made them look bang average.”
Jarrod Bowen steps up in West Ham United win v Ipswich Town
It has been a relatively quiet campaign for the England international so far, especially considering his 16 goals and six assists in the Premier League last season.
The entire squad has been struggling to adjust to the new manager’s style of play, with the Irons suffering disappointing defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea, though they were expected results.
Despite this, many fans have become frustrated by the manner of the defeats under Lopetegui, and a loss against newly promoted Ipswich could have been the final nail in the coffin.
Luckily for the Spaniard, Bowen was one of the many players who stepped up at the London Stadium, adding to his two goals and one assist so far in all competitions.
Things finally looked to click for Lopetegui’s team, even with Edson Alvarez and Crysencio Summerville on the bench, but it was the best result heading into the international break.
