Troy Deeney: England should build team around West Ham ace Declan Rice
Troy Deeney has heavily praised West Ham skipper Declan Rice and called for Gareth Southgate to build his national team around him.
The 22-year-old has led the Hammers to fifth in the Premier League table this season with a string of impressive performances. He has been a part of every England squad since making his debut in 2018 against the Czech Republic.
Speaking to talkSPORT on Thursday [18.20 pm], Deeney said Rice has proven this year he’s capable of playing at international level. He said: “For me, he’s the nuts.
“He’s the one you build the team around.
“He’s proving this year that A – he’s got the legs, B – he’s got the know-how and also he’s giving the ball away less this year. I think that’s key for international football, to keep it moving but also not make many mistakes in transition.
“Give him the confidence to say you’re the man and we’re going to build around you.”
Strong praise
West Ham fans have been saying for the last three seasons how good Rice is and the potential he has. It’s no surprise to see him get such strong praise, he’s such a talented footballer.
What sets him aside is his work ethic. He’s played every minute of every Premier League game for the Hammers, this season and last season. Stepping up to captain the side at the age of just 22 says it all, he’s taken to it like a duck to water.
David Moyes will have a job on his hands in keeping Rice at the club. He isn’t short of suitors, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all expressed an interest in the past.
If we can continue to push on this season, who knows, he may see it as more reason to stay. Rice is the obvious favourite to be named club captain once Mark Noble retires at the end of next season. If we can qualify for Europe, there is even more of a chance he’ll stay in east London.
In other West Ham news, the club could save some money this summer if they promote Conor Coventry to the senior squad next season.
