Trevor Brooking: This is what West Ham need to survive in the Premier League
Sir Trevor Brooking believes that West Ham United need more than one or two leaders to survive the drop from the Premier League.
The Hammers legend admitted that the Irons have been too soft at times during this campaign, and they can’t afford for that to happen in these final nine games.
West Ham welcome Wolves to the London Stadium on Saturday before tough games against both Spurs and Chelsea.
Brooking heaped praise on David Moyes, believing that his experience could be vital in the next few months.
“David Moyes being such an experienced Premier League manager will help and there will be key individuals in the team who will have to stick their heads up,” he told the official club website.
“One of the criticisms of our team has been there are not enough leaders and we need four or five who, when it’s wavering a bit, will stand up, get hold of the game and turn it around.
“One or two won’t be enough. We’ve been fragile at times – and this is not a time to be fragile.”
Brooking is right, we can count on one hand the number of players that have stepped up in difficult times this season, and that isn’t good enough.
Declan Rice has been at the forefront of that effort, and he is one of the youngest players in the squad. Outside of that, Mark Noble and Angelo Ogbonna can join the young midfielder of being proud of their efforts.
West Ham have spent more than enough money in the past couple of years, breaking their transfer record numerous times, and now it’s time for the likes of Felipe Anderson and Sebastien Haller to step up and prove their worth.
