Tottenham leading West Ham in race for Nottingham Forest ace Brennan Johnson

Tottenham are leading West Ham in the race for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported in its print edition (16 August, page 61) that both London clubs are interested in the 22-year-old forward’s signature, but it is Spurs who are currently favourites to land his signature.

As previously reported by The Athletic (15 June), Forest value the Wales international at a figure of around £50million.

Although, Forest have approached Chelsea over the signing of Trevoh Chalobah and hold an interest in Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez, meaning they could be forced to sell Johnson in order to raise funds for any moves.

Europe

This summer marks a rare period where the Hammers could offer something that their rivals from North London cannot, the chance for any potential arrivals to play European football this season.

After winning the UEFA Europa Conference League this past June, David Moyes’ men have qualified for the UEFA Europa League, which they will take part in during the upcoming campaign. Meanwhile, Tottenham finished eighth in the Premier League last time out and have no trips across the continent to offer any transfer targets.

West Ham

Therefore, West Ham could take advantage of this if they were to make a serious move for Johnson. The chance to play European football next year could prove tempting if Moyes’ men were to match Spurs’ offer.

Johnson scored eight goals and provided three assists in 38 league matches last season, an impressive return considering he was playing his debut season in England’s top flight, and would be a great addition for whichever club can land him.

In other West Ham news, the club want to sign another centre-back after developments in the Harry Maguire deal.
