Tomas Soucek named The Athletic Underrated PL Player of the Season

West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek has been named as Athletic’s Underrated Premier League Player of the Season.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed an unbelievable season for the Hammers thus far, and against all odds, is leading the club’s goal scoring charts.

He is tied on nine goals with Jesse Lingard and Michael Antonio despite playing in a deeper position than the two.

He’s also proven to be an aerial threat in both boxes for David Moyes’ men and deservedly has been picked as the Underrated Player of the Year.

On announcing him as the winner, they played a video of him thanking them for the award. The West Ham ace said, “I really thank you for your award. I appreciate it and am very happy to be a part of this club. I’ve been enjoying my time since I came here and am looking forward to next season.”

The Athletic’s West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas too had some interesting things to say about Soucek.

He said, “Soucek is so dedicated to improving. Shows up to training on off days and is not content with being mediocre. He wants to be really good and has already become a fan favourite at West Ham.”

Unbelievable year for him

Ray Houghton has claimed that he should be named the Player of the Year as well, referring to him as an ‘incredible’ player. [talkSPORT]

He undoubtedly makes a fine argument, but given the season some of the more attack-minded midfielders and a number of Manchester City players have had, we might see Soucek miss out on the spot.

However, that doesn’t matter to the Hammers faithful as we’ve enjoyed watching him on the pitch all season and has become one of Moyes’ first names on the team sheet.

He’s been ever so reliable and we’re grateful to have a midfielder of his calibre at the club. In Declan Rice’s absence, he’s shown himself to be capable of playing a more withdrawn position and has done so exceptionally.
