Tim Steidten opens up on West Ham United power struggle with David Moyes

Tim Steidten has revealed he turned down an offer from another unnamed Premier League club to join West Ham as he wanted full control, amid speculation of a power struggle with David Moyes.

The German joined the club as director of football last summer and was instrumental in the transfers that saw Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez join the Hammers.

But reports suggested there was an ongoing feud between Steidten and manager Moyes over the transfer policy, and in an interview with NWZ Online (9 April) Steidten has put things straight and believes they work well together.

“I would have been one of several directors there [at the unnamed club],” Steidten said. “I wanted to have overall responsibility. I wanted to take control myself. It was a stark change for all three.

“David Moyes – I think – noticed through my transfers that my work was important.

“Conversely, I learned an incredible amount from him in the months with him when it comes to perspectives on football.”

Will David Moyes stay as West Ham United manager?

All the talk at West Ham right now about the future of their club is regarding who the manager is going to be next season, rather than anything else.

Moyes is out of contract at the end of the campaign and there has been speculation about whether he will leave, with some reports stating there has already been contact to replace him.

But the manager himself has made it clear that the decision is his and that he has been offered a new deal by the current board, which suggests a lot of uncertainty behind the scenes.

Steidten was linked with the role at Liverpool recently but that is now a no-go, so if he is to stay at West Ham then he’d surely want to know what’s happening with the manager’s role.

He’ll have a big say in who is to come in to replace Moyes if he goes, and he’ll also have a big say in which players join the club regardless of the manager. So if Moyes is to stay, then Steidten’s relationship has to be positive or everything could crumble.
