The Athletic: Duje Caleta-Car to be available for £13m this summer

Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car seems poised for a move this summer and the Premier League could be his next landing spot with West Ham showing a firm interest in his services.

In The Athletic’s 60-player European Championships radar, they have included Caleta-Car’s profile – a player who has been linked with Liverpool and West Ham in the past.

Roshane Thomas from The Athletic recently reported that West Ham are likely to renter the race this summer as they’re in the market for a centre-back.

The 24-year-old is set to represent Croatia in the European Championships and there’s likely to be an array of clubs keeping an eye on him.

The report states, “It is expected that he will move in this summer and this time Marseille will not stand in his way.

“The club value him at around €20 million (£17 million) but some sources think he will end up going for around €15 million (£13 million).

“Marseille will hope that Champions League clubs see him as good value for money but some sources in France believe he will end up joining a club just below that level.”

He was closing in on a move to Anfield in January, but he decided not to leave his club mid-season, and the Reds eventually signed Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies.

Since then, they’ve also completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, meaning West Ham now can have a clear swing at him.

Must be pursued

For £13 million, he represents good value and gives the Hammers a first-choice centre-back on the cheap – meaning they can allocate their funds to strengthen other departments.

Caleta-Car is a strong and tidy defender who’s equally good at stopping the opposition from getting a sniff at goal as he is to building out from the back to help link the defence and midfield.

He’s also good at winning the aerial battles and asserting his influence over the game.

Compared to other centre-backs in Europe, he’s currently the sixth best dueller when combining offensive and defensive aerial duel ratings, and the second best in Ligue 1 behind Lille’s Jose Fonte. [Smarterscout]

We’re expecting him to be a regular starter for Croatia and will be keeping a keen eye on him in the Euros, especially for when the Baltic side takes on the Three Lions at Wembley on June 13.
