Sunderland register ‘interest’ in West Ham United midfielder Pierre Ekwah on loan

Sunderland have registered an “interest” in signing West Ham United midfielder Pierre Ekwah on loan, according to a report from Football London.

The 21-year-old is said to be on the Black Cats’ radar this January but at present, there is only interest from the Wearside club.

Ekwah is “highly rated” at West Ham but he is yet to make his senior debut for the club. He previously spent three years at the Clairefontaine Academy and was signed from Chelsea’s academy in July 2021.

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon wrote on Patreon on 16 January that the Hammers are ready to send the youngster on loan, but it seems, nothing has been decided as yet. However, a loan move makes sense for all parties involved.

Good move

It will be a good move for the midfielder, and let’s hope the Black Cats can get the deal done.

Sunderland are 10th in the league table and they are expected to challenge others for the play-off position this season.

Tony Mowbray is a vastly experienced manager, and he is looking for a box-to-box midfielder.

Ekwah has played 38 times for the Irons’ development squad, where he has made a bright impression.

The youngster has scored eight goals and provided two assists. His impressive form has seen David Moyes include him in several matchday squads for the first team but is yet to play a single minute for the senior side.

Ekwah was named in the matchday squad for both Europa Conference League qualifying matches against Viborg, but he didn’t get the opportunity to show his talent.

During the World Cup break, he featured in a friendly game against Cambridge United at Abbey Stadium in early December and scored in the 4-2 win.

A loan move to Sunderland will benefit him in his development.
