Sky Sports journalist: West Ham enter race for Juventus defender

West Ham United are still in the hunt to add another central defender before the transfer window slams shut in less than two weeks.

The Irons have missed out on Burnley enforcer James Tarkowski, with the Clarets standing firm despite three bids being placed.

David Moyes has picked the partnership of Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna twice now, with two defeats from two in the Premier League.

Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that West Ham have entered the race for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani.

In the same report, it is claimed that Newcastle are also interested in the Italy international, with Steve Bruce wanting to strengthen the same areas.

Rugani is said to be on the fringes of the Juventus squad under Andrea Pirlo and could be made available by the new boss.

The 26-year-old only made 10 appearances in the Serie A last season, with just seven of those being starts.

With Matthijs De Ligt arriving in Turin, it was always going to be hard for Rugani to force his way up the pecking order, and he has proved that.

Rugani hasn’t exactly impressed in those performances either, with the Italian completing less than one tackle per game and only 1.1 interceptions according to WhoScored.

Juventus will be expecting a decent fee for Rugani, and the Irons may be better off looking elsewhere for their next defensive reinforcement.
