Simon Jordan reacts to West Ham United Kalvin Phillips transfer in ‘worst scenario’ verdict
Simon Jordan has warned West Ham of the worst-case scenario following the agreement to bring Kalvin Phillips to the club on loan, suggesting he could struggle to get in the side.
The talkSPORT host clarified that he doesn’t think Phillips will struggle, but after his difficulties at Manchester City, a reoccurrence of that would be damaging for the midfielder.
Jordan then went on to say he is not a player that will excite the West Ham supporters, referring to him as an “okay” player but insisting he is not a “world-beater.”
Speaking live on talkSPORT [24 January, 10:23], Jordan said: “Going out to West Ham, it could re-energise him. It could do what it did for Jesse Lingard a few years ago, or it could do something that potentially damages Kalvin Phillips.
“The worst thing that could happen to him is he goes to West Ham and doesn’t get in their side, or he gets in the side, doesn’t perform and gets dropped out again. That would be an even worse scenario.
“I don’t think that’s going to happen, because if you sign a player from Manchester City, an England international who is only being kept out by other internationals because City are just an irresistible force dominating everything, then you can legislate for that.
“I think he’s an okay player, he’s clearly a decent player. I don’t think he’s a world-beating player. I think he’ll add something to West Ham but he’s not going to excite the fans. He’s not an exciting player.”
Bizzare criticism of what should be a good move
Throwing worst-case scenarios out there is a strange and fairly pointless path to take after a new transfer is agreed, because that sort of thing could be said for every transfer deal involving every player at every club, and they very rarely come to fruition.
Phillips is an England international and a regular in the team under Gareth Southgate, has performed well every time he is called upon and will bring a wealth of experience and know-how to David Moyes’ side.

Of course, there is depth in the Hammers’ midfield, but Phillips is an improvement on Thomas Soucek, which would allow him to play in the midfield alongside both Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse to create a potentially formidable trio.
To refer to him as simply an okay player is an understatement of the talent he has which prompted the best side in the country to spend upwards of £40million on him in the first place, and that is now something West Ham will benefit from.
