Simon Jordan delivers David Moyes contract admission at West Ham United

Simon Jordan has insisted that West Ham United should have handed David Moyes a contract extension.

The Irons let go of Moyes in the summer and brought in Julen Lopetegui as a replacement, but that move has backfired as they now sit fourteenth in the Premier League, just five points above the relegation zone.

Jordan reckons the East London outfit made a mistake not retaining the Scot’s services and suggested the veteran as an option for any team struggling towards the bottom of the table.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy is on the market after his short stint at Manchester United, but if you have a team who need fixing at the bottom, it’s David Moyes you want”, Jordan wrote in the Daily Mail on Thursday [14 November, page 71]

“I said a year ago that West Ham should have given David a new contract.

“He’s re-emerged from his post-United spell, when he seemed to make bad career choices.”

Lopetegui’s underwhelming start to life as West Ham head coach has led many pundits to hit out at the club for letting go of Moyes.

However, this criticism is a stretch as there is no denying that the majority of the fans were not happy with the team’s playing style under the Scottish tactician.

It was evident that West Ham needed a change in direction, but Lopetegui may not have been the right option.

It would not make sense to return to Moyes at this point and effort needs to be put into identifying a possibly younger manager who would align with the club’s plans for the future.

Moyes’s contributions to the Hammers cannot be denied as he led the club to UEFA Conference League glory in the 2022-23 season.

However, David Sullivan’s mistake was hiring Lopetegui and not withdrawing Moyes’s contract extension as many suggest. It is worth noting that Tim Steidten and Mark Noble preferred to sign Ruben Amorim, who is not at Manchester United [talkSPORT].
